Poetry Sunday: Harlem by Langston Hughes
Langston Hughes was an American poet of the twentieth century who gave voice to the experiences and aspirations of African-Americans. This is one of his more famous poems.

Harlem

What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore—
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over—
like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?
I like it! I read and analyzed this poem in a lit class in college.
ReplyDeleteI believe this particular poem is an integral part of many lit classes.
DeleteOne of my favorites! Thank you Dorothy!!
ReplyDeleteThe poem itself explodes!
ReplyDeleteI think that was probably the effect he was trying to achieve.
